What do I need to know about R Pro Decorators painting service: Before – During – Aftercare

When instructing a decorator to come and paint you need to take a few things into consideration.

1. Is there easy access for the decorator to paint the ceiling, walls, woodwork and other areas?
2. Have all personal items been removed? Anything left in the way can cause delays and result in the project overrunning.
3. Have you allowed enough time for the job to be carried out including the end process; Rushing will affect the quality of the service.
4. Do you know how long paint takes to dry? The drying process is key for your painted finished area.
5. Are you having separate trades to help with other areas of your project? Have they finished their job ready for the next stage?
6. Is everything ready for us to paint?  Are there more fittings and lights or are there more drill holes to be made?

R Pro Decorators is keen to help all our customers understand the process of painting. When we undertake any project we try to give you tips on what to do before we arrive, during the project and aftercare to avoid any problems.

Use these hints and tips to help and guide your preparation and understanding for any project.

1. Be sure to clear the area to be painted of your personal items. This can be a timely process and it may cause delays and an increase in cost of your project if it is not done before our decorators arrive. Give yourself plenty of time.
2. Keep your animals away from the painted area for a minimum of 48 hours. Any areas which need touching up or repainting as a result of pets will increase costs and time.
3. Have other trades finished the area the painter is going to work? If you are having new doors, skirting boards, architraves and other items fitted, have they been fitted correctly and are you ready for a painter? If the answer is yes then great, but if the answer is no and not everything has been fitted, this will slow down the painting process, cost more time and money. If other trades have not completed their work, they may cause damage to recently painted walls and finished areas by accident which is something you don’t want to happen.
4. Make sure other trades and visitors know where painting is taking place to minimize potential damage by keeping the area dust and dirt free.
5. The preparation work is one of many key factors of decorating. If you try and rush the process including the drying stages of the martials, fillers, undercoats, top coat and painted finish, the overall quality may be affected. Communication with decorators and other trades is key for a smooth operation.
6. Should you have the heating on high to help with the drying? The answer is no. Paint should dry in its natural environment and speeding up the drying may cause problems such as cracking and flashing. Also, it is worth noting similar issues can occur if it is too cold for the paint work to dry.
7. Are you having new flooring or carpet? If the answer is yes, you need to allow at least 2 – 3 Days in between the flooring or carpet being laid as oil paint needs to cure and harden fully.
8. The drying process on water base paint is normally very quick, oil base paint can take up to 7 days to fully harden and cure. It may appear to be dry on top and the look wont change on the surface, but be aware that often underneath it will still need to cure and harden, so caution should still be taken with the newly painted areas and its not reommend to press on oil based painted areas.
